As well as family matters, the letters deal with: Naples, Vesuvius and Pompeii; Milan; Rome; Corfu; a snow storm in the Apennines; Florence; St. Petersburg; Potsdam; Berlin; Alexandria; Mehemet Ali; the ‘howling’ of female mourners at Egyptian funerals; Egypt and the Nile; travelling in a desert caravan; Jerusalem; Bethlehem; Palmyra; an earthquake at Istanbul.
