Reference

This is based on the ‘AltRefNo’ field in CALM. This number (which may be either alphanumeric or purely numeric) is the reference you will need when requesting further information or to view material.

Item

One item within a series, which may either be an individual item or a group of similar items such as a bundle of deeds. For probate records (ie wills, administrations and inventories) the term ‘piece’ is used.

Level

This is the archival term for where the record can be found in the catalogue structure.

Series

A series is a group of similar items originating from the same creator eg a run of minute books or accounts. When you visit us to use archives you cannot order up a whole series at a time – we can only produce items or pieces.
