Most were written while he was stationed at Lucknow (1867-1868), Chakrata (1869-1871), Peshawar (1872-1873), Delhi (1874-1875), Aden (1876) and Portsmouth (1877-1878), while serving with the 55th Regiment. The letters (about 184) deal with family matters, regimental life and sporting activities, notably shooting and pig-sticking.
