TitleMinutes of the proceedings of a garrison court martial
DescriptionHeld on the island of Goree (Senegal) to try Major James Money of the 86th Regiment. Money was accused of showing disrespect to the Governor, of conduct unbecoming to an officer and gentleman, of exciting mutiny and sedition, and of encouraging a rumour accusing the Governor of fraudulent behaviour. In his defence, Money remarked upon Governor Newton’s ‘great air of pride and superiority’ and the almost daily insults he had received from him. Money was found not guilty and acquitted with honour. Accordingly to the note on the wrapper by Money’s grandson, “the prosecution on the part of the governor was cruel and malicious’. A few pages of the proceedings are missing.
