Description | Old Receipt Book of Mary Clarke, (c1701-1739), the wife of Jacob des Bouverie, 1st Viscount Folkestone, (1694-1761) started in 1719 and continued after her marriage in 1723; a loose sheet in her handwriting lists the births, baptisms and godparents of her children; the front part consists of remedies for the usual range of complaints of the time e.g. gout, gravel, colic, but also for "nervous deafness" and "weakness in women", while the back part mainly contains food recipes, with a few animal remedies, such as a cure for a horse's cold and mange on dogs |
