Description | As the 4th Earl had spent most of the inheritance of his brother and sister on renovations at Longford Castle, a trust was set up under his Will to regulate capital payments for purchases or improvements, both for estate and private matters; before 1914 this trust was used extensively for household improvements, but after 1918 it had become restricted to almost exclusively to purchases, loans and mortgages on the Folkestone and South Wiltshire Estates. Subsequently, a Resettlement Trust was set up 1 January 1891, essentially a partial disentailing device, and this was allied to the marriage settlement of Jacob, Viscount Folkestone (later 6th Earl of Radnor, 1868-1930) and Julian Balfour in the same year. There was a further reorganization in 1931 following the death of the 6th Earl, and documents have only been catalogued up to this point |
