TitleLetters to Charles Henry Talbot about the water supply for the Lacock estate.
Description1. 12 May from Edwin Eyres at Ray Mills, Lacock, to say that he has heard that there are a lot of complaints about the contamination of the water. He feels the complaints are very arbitrary.
2. 14 May from Edwin Eyres saying that if he had known about the complaints about the water he would have done something about it and would not have needed to be compelled to do it and would have switched to the Corsham water.
3. 17 May from Dr Briscoe at Chippenham Rural District Council apologising that Charles' name had become associated with the water problem and how unfortunate it was that Mr Eyres was so hostile. Some of Mr Eyres' tenants had complained to some members of the Lacock Parish Council.
4. 24 May Copy letter from Charles Henry Talbot to Dr Briscoe asking that as Chairman of the Lacock Parochial Sanitary Committee could he be told the result of analysis of the water at the Square, Reybridge as he understands that a sample was taken for analysis.
5. 25 May from Dr Briscoe saying that he had tested the water in the Square at Reybridge and found it to be impure. He informed Mr Eyres who said he would lay on the water from the Corsham supply. Remarks that if this does not happen he will ask the County Analyst to check the water and if it is condemned then the Rural District Council will take steps to compel Mr Eyres to change the water supply.
6. 15 Jun from Dr Briscoe saying that Mr Fuller had not given him permission to go to the expense of an analysis of the water and to bring the matter before the Council. Dr Briscoe hopes to do this very soon as this is not a very urgent matter.
7. 5 Jul from Dr Briscoe enclosing the report of the analysis of the water and asking for it to be returned before the next meeting. Also note by Charles Henry Talbot saying that the result of the analysis is that the water is contaminated with sewage or similar drainage and is unfit for drinking purposes.
8. 1 Aug from Dr Briscoe about the analysis of the water and other related matters. Also copy letters from Charles Henry Talbot to Dr Briscoe: 31 Jul saying that the Lacock Parochial Sanitary Committee applied to the Clerk of the District Council for various pieces of information about the water supply under certain cottages and whether it had or had not been tested and was it therefore satisfactory to drink; 2 Aug thanking Dr Briscoe for his letter of explanation - there had been a threatened notice to quit and a long letter from Mr Fortune to the Committee; 6 Aug apologising for troubling him again on the same matter but it is still not clear whether the water under Mr Fortune's cottage has indeed been tested or not and he would like to inform the Committee at the next meeting whether this is has actually taken place.
9. 7 Aug from Dr Briscoe confirming that the water under Mr Fortune's cottage has been tested by him.
