Description | 1. 13 Apr from G L Palmer, Lackham, apologising for not replying to an earlier letter about the Lacock memorial but he cannot remember receiving it, but he does not wish to commit himself until he is in residence. He says that he would like to be on the committee and take an interest in the work connected with the church restoration. If Charles Awdry was on the committee and took an interest in the scheme it would soon be commenced. Also writes of Stevens leaving Tower House and asks that if no tenant is being considered would Charles consider letting it to him as he has a gentleman coming to assist him who is anxious for a cottage and that one would suit. He would be responsible for placing the interior in a habitable condition and maintaining it. Also asks if he can visit Lacock Abbey. 2. 16 Apr from G L Palmer thanking Charles for his letter presumably agreeing to Palmer having Tower House. He presumes the rent will be the same and he wants to take possession as soon as possible. He will spend more money than he should, and asks if he should arrange matters with Charles or Mr Awdry. 3. 18 Aug from F B Shadwell at the Lackham estate office about work to be done at Tower House: he did not know any plans had been prepared by Banks and had not spoken to Mr Awdry about anything in connection with the cottage beyond asking him what he thought Charles would do to it. He told Banks the property must have an inside WC; points out the bad condition of the floors. The plans that had been shown to Charles were evidently what Banks has got out preliminary to the matter being discussed at a meeting. 4. 25 Aug from General C W Ducat about Abbey sewage disposal; only a certain amount would justify the expense; the brewery would have a considerable flow of sewage and would need certain fittings. 5. 27 Aug from Colonel Ducat confirming he is happy to give information required about the sewage transferral. He says it is cheaper than other processes. Describes the process and how it should be built. 6. 29 Aug from General Ducat to say the expense of the sewage disposal must be justified for the quantity. 7. 3 Sep from General Ducat discussing the differences between his brother and himself about the proposed system and its value and the expense. 8. 3 Sep from F B Shadwell about the method of dealing with sewage from Tower House. He has information from a man at the top of his profession in this industry who says the system works well but is very expensive. He concludes that a sealed cesspit would work in this instant which should be emptied two or three times a year. Only that particular waste would go there and all other water from the scullery and bath would go where it currently goes. There would be no overflow from the cesspit and therefore nothing objectionable would go into the river. 9. 6 Sep from F B Shadwell apologising for misunderstanding when Mr Palmer took the cottage as to who would be responsible for the alterations; the cottage has to be made habitable which is currently is not. Asks for a meeting with Charles and Banks so that proper discussions can take place over who pays for what. 10. Sep from F B Shadwell thanking Charles for his note and invitation; after a talk they will be able to better understand each other and come to an understanding about Tower House. He is tired of living in the local hotel and wants to be settled in a home of his own, however small. |
