TitleDocuments, mostly letters and accounts, relating to the non or late payment of an inheritance from the estate of Dr John Hawkins due to Elizabeth Stone, wife of John Talbot. Labelled "Cornish affair".
Description1. 26 Jan 1742 from C Hawkins to Talbot. Congratulates him and his niece on marriage. Sent (not included) statement of Elizabeth Stone's claims from Dr Hawkins' estate. mentions how estate was divided and what is due to Elizabeth.
2. 5 Aug 1743 from C Hawkins to Talbot. Bearer is Maddock with mortgage of Richard Pearce as security for the £2000 from Dr Hawkins' estate: he asks Talbot, Lady Elizabeth and his brother to execute the mortgage as they and he are owed above £600 still. A note is appended saying the letter would be sent by post, that Maddock would be at Lacock on the 15th and desiring that Talbot's brother and father (in law) should be there to meet him.
3. 7 Oct 1743 from C Hawkins to unknown, possibly John Talbot. Account of money received from Richard Pearce by mortgage on the Barton of Kerris, and hence amount due to Elizabeth Talbot (nee Stone), enclosing a bill for the amount due.
4. 15 Nov 1743 from Edward Brydges to unknown. Acknowledgement of financial transactions including £400 for Mrs Ricketts.
5. 15 Dec 1743 from Edward Brydges to John Talbot. Account, and concludes with news his mother is very ill.
6. 23 Mar 1744 from Sandys to (Talbot). He says that Mr Tonkin has approached Mr Craed to borrow the money he owes Talbot and that Praed has agreed the loan. Sandys will put together the paperwork by late May, as Mr Praed cannot provide the money sooner. He informs Talbot that Harris has not yet got the money owed.
7. 27 May 1745 from Richard Sandys to John Talbot with statement of interest from income on mortgage.
8. 22 July 1745 from Sandys to (Talbot). Sending his clerk to Talbot on the 30 of the month and would also go to Mr Stone at Badbury.
9. 24 July 1745 from C Hawkins to unknown. Bearer is Sandys' clerk with assignment of Mr Tonkin's mortgage and the last of Pearce's debt.
10. 12 Aug 1745 from C Hawkins to (Talbot). Note acknowledging receipt of Talbot's assignment of debt due from Mr Pearce and enclosing a bill for the amount due.
11. 16 Sept 1745 from Richard Sandys to (Talbot) complaining he had asked him to acknowledge receipt of 2 bills due to him and Stone and had taken steps to stop payment of the bills if necessary.
12. 18 Sept 1745 from J Stone to unknown, asking for bill of exchange for £435.8.11¾ to be given to Francis Merchant, this to discharge money owed to Stone by the recipient. Receipted by F Merchant.
13. 26 Sept 1745 from Richard Sandys to unknown saying he had received a letter from Taylor and had now authorised payment to the recipient and Stone of the amount Sandys had stopped earlier and he expected to receive money from Harris and Yelland shortly.
14. 17 Feb 1746 from Richard Maddock to John Talbot saying he had entered a bill in Chancery against Dr John Hawkins' administratrix Mrs Rachael Hawkins on behalf of his client Mr Hawkins of Trewinnard and Mrs R Hawkins had recently served a counter suit. He advises Talbot to engage an attorney, saying he (Maddock) would be pleased to represent Talbot.
15. 18 Sept 1747 from Sandys to Talbot: Sandys had received £70 from Stephen Harris and Talbot's share (£35) completes Talbots share of the £2000 owing.
16. 30 Jan 1748 from Sandys to (Talbot). Informs Talbot of a dispute with Stephen Harris as to the amount Harris owes Talbot and Sandys.
17. 15 July 1749 from Sandys to (Talbot) saying that Mrs Rachael Hawkins had agreed she holds £13,000 and that the Court had ordered her to pay half into the court immediately. He has not given up on receiving the monies due from Stephen Harris. If Mr Stone wants more information to contact the solicitor Mr Maddock.
18. 29 Sept 1758 from Thomas Carlyon to unknown. States 3 years before he was authorised by his Hawkins family members to try to sort of the affairs of Dr Hawkins' estate but wasn't successful, but now the affair is essentially over and only wants the agreement of Talbot and Stone.
19. 31 May 1760 Account between the administratrix of Dr Hawkins, Mrs Rachel Hawkins, and (1) Francis Polkinghorne and (2) Thomas Hawkins and others, the next of kin and their representatives.
20. 31 May 1760 Bill of payments to be made to Francis Polkinhorn and George Whatley.

21. 31 May 1760 Signed statement of the conclusion of the affair, signed by C Hawkins, Thomas Hawkins, Thomas Carlyon, John Carlyon, William Carlyon. Three enclosures:
a. 15 Dec 1744 Account sheet between Christopher Hawkins and John Talbot.
b. 27 Feb 1759 Acknowledgement by James Flower of payment made.
c. Flower's account of dividends paid between 1750 and 1758.

22. 20 July (1745) from Christopher Hawkins to John Stone: states that the money due from Tomkins and Pearce has long since been ready and only needs Talbot and Stone's reply to Sandy's letter asking where and when it should be paid and proposes sending a messenger to Talbot's on the 30 of the month [might relate to the arrival of Maddock in letter dated 22 July 1745].
23. Undated, unsigned note. Writer has left his house at Lacock for hunting on Salisbury Plain. Mentions recipient's family affairs being resolevd without going to law. Writer wants to take up offer of assistance, but without going through Mr Stone, having dtermined to drop all further acquaintance with him.
24. 9 Nov 1737 on a distribution of £20,000, part of the late Dr Hawkins' personal estate, securities for which held by John and Elizabeth Stone on behalf of their mother Mrs Jane Stone. Mortages/bonds owed by: Reverend Hugh Tonkin of Mullion, Henry Harris of Gwennop, Rev Stephen Harris of Lanreath, John and Elizabeth Yelland of St Stephens, Richard Pearce of Kerris, near Penzance.
25. 1737-1743 Account of Richard Pearce with John Talbot and John Stone in connection with mortgage for Leskinnick.
26. 29 Dec 1744 from Richard Sandys (to John Talbot). Mentions monies owed by Hugh Tonkin and Henry Harris, the latter may be "a troublesome chap". If they haven't paid by Lady Day, assumes he has authority to proceed to law for the recovery of the money.
27. 9 Aug 1746 from Richard Sandys to John Talbot. Mr Beauchampe has agreed to pay off Henry Harris' mortgage, giving details of the amount, plus interest. Gives arangements needed to secure the payment.
28. 6 Nov 1746 from Richard Sandys to John Talbot. He had given Harris' assignment of his mortgage to Mr Beauchamp. May not see Stephen Harris' money as he is very poor. Includes his account, which covers, interalia, costs of entering a judgement against Henry Harris at St Austell.
29. 27 Nov 1746 from Richard Sandys to John Talbot. Letters apeared to have crossed in the post. Confirms he has received Mr Beauchampe's money and sent a bill in John Talbot's and John Stone's favour.
30. 4 Dec 1746 from Richard Sandys to John Talbot. He has arranged for payment of balance owing. He has received a letter from Mr Trelawney, MP, regarding Stephen Harris and asking agreeement to him discharging his debts over two payments at the next two Lady Days.
31. 26 May 1747 from Gillingham Cooper enclosing a bill from Richard Maddock.
32. 16 Dec 1749 from James Flower (to John Talbot). Discusses financial matters resulting from the decree, including £1000 annuities transferred for John Talbot and John Stone's use.
33. 17 Mar 1750 from Robert Check concerning £1000 annuities.
34. 24 Apr 1750 from James Flower to John Talbot referring to the case against R Hawkins and giving deatils of monies paid.
35. 17 Mar 1759 receipt by Henry Bryan, on behalf of Gillingham Cooper, from James Floor for the account of John Talbot.
36. 17 Mar 1759 part letter concerning payments received and made.
37. Undated list of payments received or made to W Atkinson, George Whatley, John Burnet, John Cobb, Ralph Stennet, Peter Colt and John Turner.
38. Copy of Bill in Chancery. Rachael Hawkins, widow, against John Stone and others.
39. Copy of answer of John Stone and John Talbot at suit of Rachael Hawkins, widow (missing).
