TitleLetters to members of the Talbot family.
Description1. 20 Mar 1851 to William Henry Fox Talbot from James Waylen enclosing a newspaper article containing a notice of the death in 1685 of Sharington Talbot in a duel. He has searched for a more detailed account of the affair but cannot find one and asks for more information. Many of the newspapers contain under the date of 1645 many notices of Lacock and Colonel Boville's adventures gleaned from contemporary newspapers and not to be found in Bowles's Lacock or anywhere in modern print and that Sir John Talbot is mentioned as the bearer of the new Charter to Devizes in the year 1684/5.
2. 24 Jul 1865 from William Henry Fox Talbot to Charles Henry Talbot telling him the outcome of an election.
3. 23 Nov 1866 from William Henry Fox Talbot to Charles Henry Talbot asking how Charles is getting on, whether he has got new lodgings nearer to his club, and what day he entered the Temple. Talks of the weather in Lacock and Paris in 1824, and about plants. Asks if Charles saw the meteorite shower.
4. 29 Nov 1866 from William Henry Fox Talbot to Charles Henry Talbot to say Mr Awdry has put his money in the bank at Melksham and that he should write to the manager asking for an up to date amount of what is in his account. Talks of some experiments with chemicals; also that he can admit Charles to meetings of the Royal Institution. Mention of various other events. The Times is of the opinion that that there is going to be a rebellion in Ireland not only to dethrone the Queen there but more especially to divide all the lands among the Fenians who are now nearly penniless and therefore raise the patriot cry of Ireland for the Irish.
5. 26 Apr 1868 from William Henry Fox Talbot to Charles Henry Talbot to say accounts have been received in town from Sydney, Australia, dated nineteen days after the attempted assassination of the Duke of Edinburgh and that he was recovering favourably. The wound very nearly proved fatal. Because of the accident the Duke missed going to New Zealand where lavish preparations had been made and he also missed going to the Pacific Islands and would have returned home the next year via the Cape Horn however none of this will now happen.
6. 18 Mar 1869 from Mr Awdry's office to William Henry Fox Talbot to say they have not heard from Charles Henry Talbot, and could he relay the message that they would like him to sit on the Grand Jury. Also a letter of 19 Mar 1869 from William Henry Fox Talbot to Charles Henry Talbot conveying the message and talking about where other family members are.
7. 22 Sep 1898 from Horstmann & Sons to Charles Henry Talbot about restoring the working mechanism and face of a clock, the case and polishing.
8. 24 Sep 1898 from Horstmann & Sons to Charles Henry Talbot saying there would be no difficulty in pricing for the fretwork of another clock.
9. 8 Dec 1898 from H Snowden Ward to Charles Henry Talbot saying that they are preparing to publish a calendar for each month of the coming year and would be greatly obliged if Charles could let them have one his father's originals - particularly a view of Lacock Abbey and if possible the actual date on which the original was taken. They would then use the reduced reproduction of it on the calendar for the month in which the original was made. They were annoyed at the comment which was appended to the letter in the February issue of the Photogram appealing for funds for a memorial restoration of Lacock Church. This had apparently been written by someone who in charge while they were away on an extended visit to the United States. They would like further particulars of the proposed restoration fund so that they can deal with this much more fully and sympathetically in one of their early issues. Also a letter by Charles Henry Talbot in response to the letter from the Photogram: he says he would like a copy of the magazine so that he can see what the supposed objections were. He is happy to let them have one of his father's original photographs but he will require a little time to look it out. Also he will be unable to give them the month that it was taken and only an approximate year as his father dated his experimental photographs but not the calotypes which were made later. He will let them know the exact position of the fund at the end of the year.
