He proposed to be at home the following Friday to receive Charles (who was to enquire for him at No. 1 St. John's Street opposite the Bear Hotel) to show him what little he had relating to the antiquities of Wiltshire or to give any information he has. He also confirmed that since the publication of his book on "Wilts. Brasses" he had resigned the post of Assistant Secretary of the Wiltshire Archaeological Society, that Canon Jackson had also resigned the Secretaryship and Editorship of the Wiltshire Magazine and of his pleasure that some architectural fragments had been found at Spye Park so as to give a clue as to the date and history of the house. 2. 7 Nov 1868 from Edward Kite proposing to visit Lacock the following Monday unless the morning should be a very wet one when he would defer the journey until the next day, that he had not traced the titles in Charles Henry Talbot's absence as he wished to see him and that he proposed bringing over his engraved portrait of Bishop Sewel as well as that of his successor Bishop Abbot for comparison with the painting at Lacock Abbey. 3. 11 Aug 1892 from W H Brinkworth of the Chippenham Gas Company promoting a sale of coke due to an excess quantity and offering to deliver any quantity at 16s a ton. 4. 11 Aug 1892 from Rosamond Talbot reporting on the activities of Matilda and Mary, enclosing a letter from Connie (not in the envelope) who was looking forward to becoming mistress of Willie's house, describing the sending off of "Country Holiday" children, how she thought the annual fortnight does them a wonderful lot of good, how the Country Holiday Fund" is best institution of modern times and early reports of Ela's visit to Moreton. 5. 12 Aug 1892 from Ela Talbot expressing sorrow to hear of the deaths of West Awdry and his son and describing her visit to Moreton Dorchester. 6. 12 Aug 1892 from Henry Williams informing Charles that due to the number of guardians wishing to attend the funeral of West Awdry he intended to give notification of the timings of the funeral to each guardian. 7. 13 Aug 1892 from J Taylor and Sons apologising for the delay in the order but that coke was awaited from Bristol, going on to offer coke at 16s per ton or if twenty tons were taken 15s 6d. 8. 14 Aug 1892 from P Delme Awdry thanking Charles for his kind sympathy regarding his uncle's death. 9. 16 Aug 1892 from Edward M Young thanking Charles for an interesting paper from the Wiltshire Magazine and offering to send a paper from the Dorset Antiquarian in return and an engraving of St John's Almshouse at Sherborne (formerly an Auginian hospital dedicated to St. John the Baptist in 1448) before restoration by Mr Carpenter. 10. 17 Aug 1892 from G Loftus Brook at the British Archaeological Association Congress in Cardiff 1892 acknowledging receipt of Charles' note and stating that he would not be able to reply until he had again been to Sudeley which he hoped to do on his way back from Cardiff. |
