Description | 1. 21 Oct 1876 Article from Bath Herald, North Wiltshire and Somerset Guardian about a Norman Church of which no part now remains but is known to have existed at Lacock. Recent restorations had uncovered some stones of a Norman edifice which had been used again by perpendicular builders. It carries much information about the site and with dates of births and deaths and marriages and at the end is a letter from Charles which gives further information and corrections about various people involved with the site. 2. 29 Jun 1876 from Charlotte Traherne about a family death: the injury received could not be repaired. Asks for some letters to be returned to her which she lent William Henry Fox Talbot some time ago. 3. 21 Feb 1876 from A C Smith, Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, about a dispute Charles has with the magazine and a Mr Kite. 4. 12 Jul 1876 from Innislonagh, Clonmel, about train times at various stations. 5. 1 May 1876 from Job Edwards, Amesbury in reply to a letter received from Charles about the photographing of various land documents for clarification. Mr Edwards is expecting Charles to visit for this purpose. States he will be pleased to point out various interesting places to Charles. 6. 6 Nov 1875 from WANHS about the manuscript arriving safely; and it will shortly be printed but could they have the illustrations as soon as possible. They are in difficulties over Mr Kite who is delaying things. 7. 15 Nov 1875 from WANHS: further correspondence about the magazine. 8. 3 Jan 1876 from WANHS: further correspondence about the difficulties with Mr Kite and how he would enjoy knowing that he is causing such difficulties; requesting that Charles now contact him and see if he can stir him up. 9. 3 Aug 1877 from Job Edwards about the photographing of a document: Mr Edwards does not want to send the document to Charles in the post as he fears its loss because it is valuable and also the seals may be damaged. His farming is currently taking up his time as well as his archaeology and when he has the leisure he would like Charles to visit so that he can point out the site of Ela's house. Expresses his pleasure in the fact that he is addressing the person who will be the heir to Lacock Abbey and who will protect it from modern innovation. 10. 17 Aug 1876 from Edward Stevens of WANHS to say that railway tickets have been sent. 11. Cheques dealt with by the North Wilts Banking Company, Melksham and returned to Charles Henry Talbot (13). 12. 2 Aug 1876 Note from J E Jackson, canon, thanking him for the Lacock Chapel Agreement and making some corrections and pointing out some historical difficulties. 13. Aug 1876 Note from Canon Jackson about the funeral of Anne of Cleves and giving some historical notes about the construct and fabrics used. 14. Aug 1876 Note from Canon Jackson about another historical funeral and the construct and fabrics used. 15. 11 Feb 1876 letter from A C Smith, WANHS about the fact that as the illustrations from Mr Kite have not been forthcoming then the magazine should go to print immediately as it is dated for Dec 1875. Members would have expected to receive it in the middle of January so it is already late. The possible consequence of withdrawal of possible members may have to be suffered. 16. 9 Nov 1875 First copy of a letter, with corrections, from Charles requesting permission from the Camden Society to copy a sketch of Spye Park Lodge, dated 1684, for the purpose of illustrating a paper about the old house. Charles also asks if permission may be given to use such subjects as necessary so that he doesn't have to apply separately each time. 17. 12 Nov 1875 from Alfred Kingston, Public Record Office, London, letting him know that his request with regard to copies he wishes to have made of some of the illustrations in Dingley's History from Marble, published by the Camden Society, will be raised at the next meeting on 1 Dec but he cannot see any problem granting permission. 18. 23 Dec 1875 from Charles to the Public Record Office, saying that he has not heard about the decision of the meeting on 1 Dec about requested permission and thinks the letter to him may have gone astray. 19. 11 Oct 1875 from the owner of a cottage at Clonmel saying she and her husband will be in Bath the following month. 20. 1874 Receipted bill from Marshall Lord, tailors, habit makers and undertakers, for clothing items. 21. 21 Oct 1875 from A C Smith, saying that the proof was sent to Charles and that he may well find some mistakes in the wording but that they survive them and sometimes even laugh at them when they are not very troublesome. 22. 1874 Receipted bill from W H Smith & Son, booksellers and newspaper agents, for newspapers. 23. 1873 Receipted bill from R E Peach, bookseller, stationer and librarian, for the Digest of the English Census. 24. 1873 Receipt from Wilts Discharged Prisoners Aid Society for yearly subscription. 25. 1872 Receipted bill from L R and I Darley, architect surveyors, for surveys and work on the roofs at Lacock. 26. 18 Nov 1875 from Edward White about an encaustic tile found by William Kenrick, among the earth near the chimney stack in the Old House at Keevil. Turns out to be one of the Lacock tiles with the scorpion and initials W S [William Sharington]. Unknown how it could have got to Keevil and the sender is curious to find out whether the Sharington family ever had any interest in the house or whether it is a stray tile which got there by accident. 27.1874 Receipt from Lanning Brothers, ironmongers, Weymouth. |
