Description | 1. 9 Oct 1877 to Rosamond Talbot from Richard Cull who has been requested by the President of the Society of Biblical Archaeology to write a memoir of William Henry Fox Talbot but he does not have any personal knowledge of him and he cannot write a memoir on the information in the Times. William Henry Fox Talbot was friendly with a late friend of Cull's and they had a high regard for each other. He saw a pretty water colour at an exhibition of lady artists at Great Marlborough Street two years previously and was told it was done by the daughter of Fox Talbot; asks if this is her. 2. 19 Jun 1894 from Dr Sebastian Evans to say that he had recently met with Mr Scott, the director of the manuscript department at the British Museum, about Charles' French manuscript. Talks of historical information about Walter de Bibelesworth. 3. 23 Jan 1899 from George E Brown enclosing a notice of meetings during the winter season of the North Wilts Field and Camera Club. Sends a copy of "Photography" containing an article on William Henry Fox Talbot that Charles had helped with. Mentions the progress of the Fox Talbot memorial fund. Asks if Charles could lend him some calotypes as he is giving a talk on early photography. 4. 24 Jan 1899 from George E Brown to say he is glad Mr Snowden Ward is interested in the Fox Talbot memorial fund and he is sure the Photogram will draw attention to the matter. Says that 12 calotypes will be sufficient for his talk and asks if Charles can supply any further information. 5. 31 Jan 1899 from George E Brown thanking Charles for the calotypes which have been safely received. 6. 22 Aug 1899 from George E Brown to say he is now acting as assistant to H Snowden Ward of the Photogram, and he is now acquainted with the plans in the matter of the memorial. 7. 3 May 1909 Note about the death of Reverend William Sanderson Miller, priest of Radway Grange, Warwick. 8. Dec 1909 Note about parcels to be collected. 9. 3 Jan 1914 Newspaper cutting from the Globe of the retirement of Brigadier-General F G Stone listing when and where he served, and what rank he achieved. 10. 16 Oct 1914 Letter from Aaron Watson to say that he has been to Rowde to see the carved stones which are very similar to those at the Lacock house; he thinks the Lacock ones may be older but they are the work of the same architect or builder. Discusses the various stones. 11. 12 Jun 1914 from Charles Henry Talbot to Goddard discussing a letter in the Wiltshire Gazette on the subject of Mr Styles and the houses at Bowden, and Oeiles becoming Eyles. Gives information about how the name change came about and some history of the family and marriages. Includes 4 newspaper cuttings. 12. 18 Dec 1914 from Theresa Maskelyne discussing a discovery of the latest image as told by William Henry Fox Talbot. Asks if she could see the Photogram in which it is listed. 13. 23 Dec 1914 from Theresa Maskelyne thanking him for copying out the paper and sending it to her. 14. Newspaper cuttings in an envelope with notes of a right of way and an ancient footpath across the fields from Bewley Lane to Reybridge cut when the canal was made. Two of the cuttings are about the First World War: one about the death of Lacock's youngest soldier, and the other about the value of old tins and the process of detinning or extracting the tin from used pots, pans and tins. Also contains articles about the alleged rudeness of a council official, about no railway station at Lacock, about the state of the roads and highways in Melksham and the surrounding areas, and the Irish Rebellion. |
