TitleLetters to Charles Henry Talbot.
Description1. 13 Sep from John Paley concerning a visit by E Awdry who on restoring his church had found a short pipe and discussing the date of "the smoking man" (a painting or drawing), that smoking tobacco was known in England before Rayleigh although the smoking of hemp was more common and that when Rayleigh introduced tobacco it was eagerly made use of by those who had before smoked hemp.
2. 14 Sep from John Paley enclosing a letter from R Humphries of Heckmondwicke enquiring about possible burials of persons of the name "Rawleigh or Raleigh" at Lacock.
3. 16 Sep from Edward Awdry enclosing a note from Canon Jackson of Leigh Delamere who has been ill with "5 weeks of continued pain" and although very weak hopes he is now over it. Edward Awdry's letter confirms Jackson's illness but hopes that despite his age (born in 1804) he will be restored to his former health, that he will be much missed but that his writings will long remain.
4. 20 Sep from John Paley enclosing a response from Mr (unknown) to his letter (not enclosed).
