Description1. 14 Jun 1665 Draft answer of Sir John Talbot to the bill of complaint of Anne, Countess Dowager of Sussex and Adam Hawkins. Concerns land originally in the forest of Chippenham and Melksham (Blackmore) now in dispute. Parties: Christopher Earl of Anglesey, Sir Henry Sharington, Sir Edward Bayntun, Elizabeth Countess Dowager of Anglesey, Charles Earl of Anglesey, Robert Hawkins and Andrew Bayntun.

2. 1677 Copy of recovery of lands in Worcestershire.

3. 1 Apr 1699 Copy of bargain and sale of the manors with appurtenances of Liddington, Coate and Walcot to Francis Godolphin. Parties: Sir John Talbot of Lacock; William Rowley of London esquire and Nicholas Charleton of London esquire; Charles Godolphin of the parish of St James, Westminster esquire and his wife Elizabeth, administratrix with Francis Godolphin of Sir William Godolphin deceased; Francis Godolphin of Spargor, Cornwall esquire and James Smith of Kensington, Middlesex.

4. After 1715 Copy of the formal answer of William Oldfield to the bill of complaint of Anne, Countess Dowager of Sussex. Undated.

5. 28 Jan 1714 Declaration of answer from Charles, Duke of Shrewsbury, Richard, Earl of Scarborough, William Longueville and Thomas Gibson to the bill of complaint of John Talbot alias Ivory. Declaration that they need to make an answer to the complaint by John Ivory Talbot.

6. 19 Feb 1714 Formal answer of Bryan Stapleton to the bill of complaint of John Talbot alias Ivory. Stapleton says he was made an executor and trustee of Sir John Talbot in his will but that seeing how much trouble and inconvenience the duties will be he declines to act in the capacities given and will give way to whoever is appointed by the Court.

7. 19 Feb 1714 Formal answer of Charles, Duke of Shrewsbury, Richard Earl of Scarborough, William Longueville and Thomas Gibson to the bill of complaint of John Talbot alias Ivory. They agree that they had made an agreement with Sir John Talbot that had not been paid.

8. Court proceedings of Talbot v Shrewsbury, 12 May 1714 between John Talbot alias Ivory and Charles Duke of Shrewsbury et al. Mentions names of those involved, background to the case and answers of various people. Damaged: please refer to the copy.

10. 11 Dec 1714 Draft answer of William Bromley to the bill of complaint of John Talbot alias Ivory. Bromley says he was made an executor to Sir John Talbot's will and a trustee for the estate but when he realised that John Talbot had died with large debts he declines to be an executor and trustee. Document originally relates to William Bromley and Sir Bryan Stapylton (Stapleton) but all references to Stapleton have been crossed out.

11. 11 Dec 1714 Formal answer of William Bromley as drafted above, without the mention of Sir Bryan Stapleton.

12. 25 Oct 1714 Ivory v Talbot: draft petition for a guardian to be appointed for the infant John Talbot alias Ivory. Enclosed are two documents:
Application on behalf of Talbot Ivory, being a minor, that his mother, Dame Anne Ivory, be appointed his guardian.
Undated: draft report that as Talbot Ivory is an infant his guardian had been called to attend. Much crossed out.

13. 1714 Draft indenture of sale of the manor of Pottern from John Ivory. Parties: John (Talbot, crossed out) Ivory, Charles, Duke of Shrewsbury, Richard, Earl of Scarborough, William Longueville. Refers to rental, dated 13 Oct 1707, of Potterne Manor House and land. Also mentioned are tenants of land, some named: William Lye, Richard Cromwell, Ann White, Thomas Grubb, William Long, Robert Nicholas, Robert Pope. Also refers to agreement dated 1 Sep 1709 for Sir John Talbot to assign Potterne Manor to Charles Duke of Shrewsbury, Richard Earl of Scarborough, William Longueville and Thomas Gibson. Sir John Talbot surrendered the Manor to Nicholas Busfield 13 Oct 1711. Philip Ess bought the Manor.

14. 12 Mar 1715 Copy of decree Talbot v Duke of Shrewsbury et al.

15. Undated document concerning the employment of the poor in the borough of Chippenham, and various lands surrounding it.
