Affadavit 9 Jun 1709 by John Jones to say that pirates came aboard the Greyhound and took 12,500 pagodas from him and St John Bennet. 3. Account 12 Sept 1709, original made at Madras 8 Sep 1709. Showing 525 pagodas saved from the Greyhound robbed by pirates at Madagascar. Made on oath by St John Bennett to John Coke, Mayor of Fort St George. 4. Letter 27 Sept 1709 on legal opinion by Dee and Hungerford that the claim of piracy fails as the slaves and other commodities were sold and unloaded at Madagascar but the buyers then took their money back. St John Bennet is therefore liable for the sum involved since the offence was not committed at sea. 5. Undated letter to the Worshipful William Jennings, Mayor and Aldermen assembled (Madras), complaint of Joan Collins, executor of Richard Carey (deceased), that St John Bennet had not repaid a bond of 816 pagodas. 6. Petition of appeal against judgement of Mayors Court. 9. Affadavit 19 Jan 1713 by Alex Dalgleish, Mate of the Greyhound, that he had no knowledge of any goods aboard except 14 bales, given by the pirates, some slaves and sugar liquor. The pirates brought several bags of money aboard having made Captain Jones and Mr Bennet prisoners. 10. Undated letter from St John Bennet to Mayor and others in answer to complaint of Joan Collins that the case has been dismissed. Request that, having paid the percentage due to all creditors he be freed from further suits. |
