Description1. Undated letter: no addressee or signature. Details of the undermining of Mr Hastings, Governor of Madras. Story of a Spanish Jew, once a Turk in Constantinople but now professing Christianity who had been lured aboard a Portugese frigate in Bengal and delivered to the Inquisition in Goa. Released by the Viceroy on a false promise of settling the Chittys in Goa. Machinations of Governors Collet and Harrison who imprisoned almost a hundred of the Chittys, without enquiry but with 40,000 pagodas demanded for their release. Ruin of their business.
2. 21 Feb 1718 Letter to Henry Davenport at Fort St David from Governor Hastings informing of the death of Captain Hobbs and promotion of Ensign Morgan.
3. 24 Apr 1718 Receipt from Thomas Alexander, Laceman of Covent Garden, to Captain Lister for gold fringe, orris and lace, £33.8.6.
4. 15 Jan 1720 Letter to Henry Davenport from Governor Hastings: hasty departure of Governor Collet, fears of supersession, possibility of resettling Bencoolen by Mr Syke with about 40 soldiers.
5. 14 Jan 1720 Letter to Henry Davenport from Ama Colondey. Thanks for commending her to Governor Harrison but claiming that he had paid her only 100 of the 120 pagodas promised and that the gun Henry Davenport had given her brothers, Peons of the Company, had been taken away.
6. 25 Nov 1719 Letter to Henry Davenport from Captain Weld at Calcutta. News of the settlement of the war at Surat, high turnover amongst local Kings, European deaths and returns to Europe.
7. 15 Jan 1720 with copy of letter of 6 Oct 1719 to Henry Davenport at Fort St George from Governor Hastings. Details of the loss of Bencoolen to a 'native uprising' and suggestion that Mr Cooke, driven therefrom, should be disgracefully turned out of the service. News from Batavia that Mr Dyke and 40 soldiers are to attempt recovery of Bencoolen.
8. 15 Jan 1720 2 letters to Henry Davenport from Mr Theobald at Fort St George: report of losses and seizure of ships by the Gov of Manilla, since killed by the inhabitants for oppression. Diamond trade very bad, chintz painting sent out since the colours, especially green, not so good or lasting in Madras. Thanks for news of the Spanish Invasion upon Ireland.
9. 5 Feb 1720 Letter to Henry Davenport from Mr Theobald at Fort St George. Arrival of Chintz and intent to return to Europe because of famine and 'greater ills threatening destruction of this place'.
10. 30 Aug 1720 Letter and a copy to Henry Davenport from Mr Theobald at Fort St George recommending Mr George Drake to his protection.
11. 31 Aug 1720 with copy of letter dated 17 Feb 1719 to Henry Davenport in London from Governor Hastings detailing local factions and plots against him.
12. 15 Nov 1720 Letter in French, from Thomas Capucin at Madras detailing attacks by pirates upon shipping.
13. 10 Jan 1721 Letter and a copy to Henry Davenport from Francis Hastings at Fort St George re ships lost to "pyrates" and miserable state of trade.
14. 15 Mar 1721 Letter to Henry Davenport at Worfield, abstract of private affairs in London.
15. 30 Nov 1721 Letter to Henry Davenport at Worfield from Mr Hill of Cleveland Court asking for a meeting to settle an account opened with the brother of Henry Davenport.
