Description1. 22 Apr 1708 Subscription paper for the ship Essex travelling with a stock of 10,000 pagodas to Jehore with the ship Kent. Includes a list of subscribers.
2. 29 May 1708 Attested copy of the secret instructions and invoice for the Ship Essex. Advising of the disposal of cargo at Jehore to be acted on jointly between Walter Keir and James Lapthorne and suggesting they trust nobody.
3. 15 Feb 1709 Letter from Captain James Lapthorne to Captain Edward Harrison about the abundance of misfortunes since the death of Mr Keir.
4. 15 Feb 1709 Letter from Captain James Lapthorne to Gulstone Addisone about Mr Keir and how he got the Captain of the Ship Duans to take him on board. He will give him the whole account of his unfortunate voyage since the death of Mr Keir when he sees him.
5. 23 Nov 1709 Letter from James Lapthorne to the owners of the ship Essex about an anchor and cable for the ship.
6. 23 Nov 1709 Letter from James Lapthorne to the owners of the ship Essex about the journey he had had and the bad weather.
7. 1 Dec 1709 Letter from James Lapthorne to Robert Raworth and the owners of the ship Essex to say he will obey Raworth's command to accept orders from Mr Farmer.
8. 3 Dec 1709 Letter from Richard Farmer to Robert Raworth and the owners of the ship Essex advising that he delivered the sealed letter from Raworth and sent Gunner Hugonin on board to take account of what he found. Unfortunately the ship was rolling so much he had to return to shore immediately and only managed to look down into the hold where he saw a lot of pepper and casks of arrack. Also advising that the treasure he has secured remains in his custody until further orders.
9. 6 Dec 1709 Letter from James Lapthorne to Robert Raworth and the owners of the ship Essex about Mr Farmer on the order of Raworth being allowed to inspect the cargo in the hold before being unloaded. Farmer took the treasure away to his house before a letter was received from Raworth. Lapthorne needed a decision as to whether the sailors should be paid in pagodas or Spanish dollars.

11. 1712 Court document with the applied seal of Madras: Thomas Plumb and the owners of the ship Essex entered an attachment against the effects of Walter Keir in the hands of Henry Davenport for 2,000 pagodas; 19 Aug 1712 a petition was read requesting payment of money due to them from the estate of Walter Keir on account of opium sold by him at Mallacca which belonged to the owners of the Essex; Henry Davenport was ordered to pay $1710 with court charges for the account of the owners of the Essex.
