| Description | A collection of diaries of Jane Hussey Townsend (b.1844) formerly of Mompesson House, The Close, Salisbury (1860-1882) and her mother Elizabeth Georgina (née Eyre) (1831-1840) who also lived in the Close, with her brother Daniel, sub dean of the Cathedral, before her marriage. The diaries provide a detailed record of family life in the Close, and at the family house called Gundimore, Mudeford, Christchurch, Hants. A useful introduction to the diaries is provided by the taped accounts by Mrs. Jane Walford, great grand-daughter of Jane Hussey Townsend, of her family history. Jane's sister Barbara is described in Four Victorian Ladies of Wiltshire by Edith Olivier (1945). Jane's diaries have been microfilmed by Adam Matthew Digital as part 5 of its Women's Language and Experience c1540-1940 project and are available through subscribing academic institutions. |
