DescriptionBy an Act of 26 Hen. VIII, c.3, annates (first fruits) and tenths were in future to be paid to the king instead of to the Pope; and by another Act, 32 Hen. VIII, c.45, the Court of First Fruits and Tenths was set up. In 1554 this court was abolished and its business annexed to the Exchequer; its records and business were to be dealt with by a new officer, the Remembrancer of the First Fruits and Tenths. Bishops and others who had the collection of tenths were to account before the Auditors of the Exchequer and pay money direct into the Receipt of the Exchequer; first fruits had to be paid to the Remembrancer.
