TitleAct book
DescriptionAct book . At the beginning are 15 leaves recording the proceedings of a commission on heresy, principally against Julius Palmer of Reading [see D.N.B.] and Thomas Robyns alias Glasier of Newbury, Berks., 1556-1558. It is incomplete, some pages at the beginning being missing; also pp. i-vi were found with the first act book. The cases were held in several places, according to where the defendant came from, and the causes, which were office causes, are given in full - articles against heretics, sometimes with their answers, sentences of excommunication, etc. After this separate section come ordinary acts of court, 1565-1568. In October 1566 and April 1568, the courts were held in the parish church of Marlborough St. Mary, and in November 1566, in St. Paul's London. They were also occasionally held in the Palace, before the bishop. A number of the sentences are given in English, and include such things as giving alms to the poor in lieu of public penance. There are also some depositions.
