Title
Excommunications.
Description
Excommunication was the chief method of coercion open to the ecclesiastical authorities and was used up to the 18th century or occasionally even later. Sentences were passed on people who refused to go to church or to pay church rates or tithes and also on disobedient clergy. People who refused to obey summons to court might be handed over to the civil power if they continued to be obstinate. Lesser excommunication (deprivation of sacraments and divine service) was used on people who disobeyed a citation, etc.
