ff30r-31r. 30 Mar 1598. Blacker v William Carre; tithe, Warminster. Evidence of:
Edmund Pirrie*, Warminster, yeo, 32; has lived there from infancy. For 20 years until the last 10 or 11 he lived with his father in law, Mr Peter Bristowe and his wife, then farmers of the rectory. Carr claimed that two north closes were not in the parish, but adjoins Norridge wood on the north side and belonged to Kington’s Court chapel [in Upton Scudamore].
Robert Deacon*, Motcombe, Dev, yeo, 52; has lived there for 12 years; before at Warminster where he was born. 33 or 34 years ago for 6 or 7 years he lived with his kinsman William Perry, farmer of the rectory, and helped his kinsman’s ploughman gather the tithe corn and hay which they took to the parsonage barn. Norridge woods lay on the south side of the closes in question and Norridge down on the west side of them.

John Morgan; had heard that about 2-3 years ago, Margery had a child out of wedlock with [John] Furnell of Chitterne. Not knowing that she had been excommunicated, at the request of Thomas Russell, ‘not of the wiser sorte of a man, nor yet the foolishe’, went with Waters to obtain a licence for Russell & Cox to be married in Longbridge, naming himself as Russell. The marriage did not take place. Ref to Mr Thinn, the minister.

Evidence of Richard Hayne, Stanton St Bernard, yeo, 50; has lived there for 7 years; before at Donhead St Andrew where he was born. He was asked to come to the house of John Brockway to witness his will, with John in his bed in the chamber above the hall. It was written down by mr [Hugh] Partridge, curate of Donhead. Warborough.

Responses of John Rudman and Nicholas Moxam, churchwardens to charges and articles of William Goare [Gore]; church seating. Goare was given licence to build a seat near the pulpit, but did not talk with the parishioners, who he believed should give consent for new seats. mr Longe made no petition against it at the time.

John Blanchard, husbandman, 55; has lived there for 18 years. Mr Edward Long of Monkton is a man ‘of most worth and cheefest’ in the parish.
John Awst*, 60; has lived there for 40 years. Mr Long’s wife is ‘a grosse gentlewoman ‘ and has her daughter ‘married in house’ wIth her.
John Hibbard, fuller, 30; has lived there for 16 years; was born at Tellisford, Som. On mr Long’s commandment he went with the churchwardens on the very same morning when the seat was being built and asked for the work to be stopped until the parishioners had conferred.

William Gilbert, 44; has lived there for 20 years. John Edwards & Roger Phillips have been inhabitants of the parish for upwards of 20 years and were elected churchwardens by the consent of the parishioners around last Allhallowstide.
Edward Hatter, 42; has lived there for 8 years; was born there. He was one of the churchwardens who preceded Edwards & Phillips.

He visited the testator in his death bed in a low parlour on the day he made his will. Maud was executor; Hulbert and Goldesborowe were overseers. Mr Adam Hill has subsequently married Maud.

Geoffrey Greenawaie, husbandman, 48; has lived there for 12 years; was born at [Winterbourne] Monkton. Was a covenant servant to Sir Oliver [Boswicke], late parson of Calstone. He never received more than 10s for the tithes and Easter offerings. Mr Jones, now parson, refused to accept this amount. Has known Hore 19 years & Jones since he was parson [1588].
Catherine Mathew, 40; has lived there for 20 years. She is a fuller’s daughter & lives with her brother John Mathew.
Henry Yonge, husbandman, 40; has lived there for 24 years, saving 5 years. Has known Hoare for 26 years and Jones 12.
William Buckland*, tailor, 24; has lived there for 10 years; was born at Calne. has known Hore since childhood & Jones for 16 years. His father was a loader at the mill. Has known Rackclose for 20 years and it has never been made less or enlarged ‘than it is att this houre’.
