Evidence of Anthony Seymour*, 86, Sutton Mandeville, husbandman; has lived there of 25 years, before in Teffont Evias where he was born, except, 70 years ago, when fro three years, he lived at Brooke House, Westbury, and under his uncle, Thomas Seymour, had the ‘whole charge & looking unto of the deere & game’ within Brook park. Pilcherd & Allen v Eleanor Middlecott; testamentary re the estate of Henry Stokes, who died about 6 years ago, which his widow, Alice enjoyed without a grant of administration until her death last March; Elizabeth Allen, Eleanor Middlecott and Christian Rawlins alias Scutt are daughters of Henry, Alice is their mother in law:

Admin bond of Henry’s estate granted to John Allin, baker and Thomas Pilcherd, weaver, on behalf of Elizabeth Allin and Alice Pilcherd, natural daughters of Henry (Henry Stokes P2/S/208). f5v-8v, 21 Apr 1601. John Erle v Katherine Grundie; defamation. Evidence of: Hugh Broome, 64, Crudwell, tailor; has lived there for 45 years, born in Aymestrey (Heref).
Richard Wiggol, 40 of Chedglow in Crudwell, plasterer; has lived there for 9 years, before at Hadley in Suffolk for 14 years, raised in Crudwell.
Agnes Wigoll, aged between 45 and 50, wife of Roger Wiggoll, Crudwell; has lived there for 9 years.

Henry Fermer, Hankerton, husbandman, 50; has lived there since birth: Joan Walter, Garsdon, widow, 25; one month at Chedglow in Crudwell; 2 years in Malmesbury; Katherine Grundy was born in Market Lavington; 7 years ago her husband left her when they lived in Malmesbury; she moved to Westport for 6 years; c 1 year ago she went to St Giles in the Fields, London to seek her husband, but learned that he had ‘gone for a souldier’; returned to friends in Charlton.
William Cole, 50, Midbourne in Liddington, husbandman; has lived there 40 years; Roger Wiggoll is a bondman presented at the court of the manor of Crudwell; Hugh Broome is a poor man, hayward of the parish of Crudwell, and an almsman of the parish; Agnes Wiggoll has taken the seat in the church which Catherine Grundy has used for 26 years.
John Mills, Chedglow in Crudwell, 50, husbandman has lived there 18 years.

Evidence of: Charles Harris, Flamston in Bishopstone (South Wilts), husbandman, 34; has lived there 16 years; before in Martin where he was born; for twelve years was servant in the house of Thomas Clarck.
Richard Bevis, Stoney Stratford (Wilts); before 6 years in Coombe Bissett, 7 years in Salisbury St Edmund; born in Andover, (Hants).

Agnes Waterling, Hatherdon in Tangley (Hants), spinster, 30; has lived there half a year, before in North Tidworth; was at Ashlies in Andover.
f22v.-23v. 19 May 1601. Edward Brooker*, 20, BA, Exeter College, Oxford; was teaching at a school for 12 months in Tidworth.
Alice Hed, 35, wife of Richard Hed, Tidworth, husbandman; has lived there 20 years.

ff18r-21r, ff23v-24v. 5, 19 May 1601. Edith Oldfeild v John Hutchins; defamation. Evidence of: Margaret Dier, 50, wife of Richard Dier, Heddington, husbandman; has lived there 24 years; was with Joan Child, midwife, when John Hutchins was asked if he was the father of a child of Joan Oldfeild.
Joan Lanfer, 30, wife of Richard Lanfer, Heddington, husandman; has lived there since her childhood, before in Bradford on Avon.
Joan Child, 50, wife of William Child, Catcombe in Hilmarton; has lived there 6 years; before 40 years in Heddington; was midwife who attended Margaret Dier.

Evidence of deponents all of Aldbourne: John Bright, husbandman, 70; has lived there since infancy and was born there; Browne was for 2 and a half years a servant of Mr Roger Waldrone and wore his livery, attending him to and from church:
Richard Jones, servingman, 35; has lived there 20 years; Browne served Mr Waldrone at home and at table:
Nicholas Prick, 24; has lived there 5 years. [John Bright signs with his initials, but with an inverted B]

ff25r-28r. 19 May 1601. John Hitch v [William] Scott: clerical neglect. Evidence of deponents all of Erlestoke: Richard Mynty, 78, yeo; has lived there 50 years; was born in Devizes; Erlestoke church is 5 miles from Melksham and the vicar of Melksham has always provided a curate to serve Erlestoke and a house to live in.
Edward Perrot, 60, husbandman; has lived there from infancy and born there; William Black served as curate 48 years; then Thomas Shoell; then [William Payne] the vicar of Melksham, who was the predecessor of Mr [John] Moore; then curates John Whitley, Mr Dugdale, all maintained by the vicar; John Hitch served the cure from St Andews tide 1598 until the same time 2 years ago; Mr Good served except at Easter then went to Potterne; since then the cure has been neglected and supplied by neighbours’ ministers.
Walter Perrot, 60, husbandman; has lived there from birth; the vicarage of Melksham is worth £80 pa.

ff28v-29r. 2 June 1601. John Ward v Agnes Hubbard; defamation about John’s wife, Elizabeth. Evidence of John Jerret*/Gerret, Salisbury St Thomas, want catcher, 26; has lived there from birth; was in Ward’s home close laying a ‘wante thowe’ to catch a want (mole).

Eleanor Higgins v John Wastfeild and associated cases, Higgins v Mary Elie (daughter of Elizabeth Wastfeild) and Eleanor Higgins v John Crooke; defamation; Eleanor, a widow, had a ‘greate bellie’ and was believed to be pregnant. Evidence of deponents all of Langley Burrell, unless otherwise stated:

William Berrie*, 40, rector of Langley Burrell; has been rector for 14 years.
John Hatherell, weaver, 39, has lived there from birth.
William Milsham, Melksham, husbandman; has lived there 10 weeks, before 6 years in Chippenham.
Joan Land, 39, wife of Thomas Land, husbandman; has lived there 13 years:.
Thomas Messiter, day labourer, 57; has lived 40 years.

John Edoles, husbandman, 30; has lived there 2 years refers to John Elie’s house (ie alehouse) in Langley Burrell.

Thomas Hodson, broad weaver, 25; has lived there 2 years; last Shrovetide working in his shop on his broad loom with Thomas Wastfield, brother of Eleanor.
Edward Cooke, weaver, last Shrovetide he was apprentice to Hodson and worked in his shop.
Richard Bayly, Salisbury, yeo, 44; has lived there 5 years: as [apparitor] issued a citation to John Crooke; who came to Richard Vincent’s house in Chippenham. and was asked about his words against Eleanor; that she had lain with John Prior in the little chamber within the entry of her father’s house and that she was as common as the highway.

William Heathe, husbandman, 34, has lived there from birth.
John Kinge, tanner, 27, has lived there from birth.
Edmund King, tailor, 22, born there and lived there from infancy; refers to the [alehouse] of Andrew Shepherd at Charlcote. [No signature or mark].
William Kinge*, Wick in Bremhill, husbandman, 34; has lived there since birth. See D1/42/18.

ff34r-37r, ff49v-50v. 20, 29 June 1601. Mathew v Downe; tithe dispute arising from a grant of the tithes of Burdonsball farm by Mr John Hewes to Andrew Mathew. Evidence of deponents all of Wilton, who were called to the hall of Burdonsball house, in South Newton, about 4 years ago, to witness the signing of the grant: Richard Baylard, husbandman, 58 (has lived there 12 years), and John Burgis, 38 (has lived there 2 years and before at Burdonsball); William Rolf, 60, (has lived there 14 years), is Mathew’s shepherd. in South Newton Mr [John] Downe, is curate of South Newton.
John Hughes*, 74, perpetual vicar of South Newton, for 28 years; the grant of tithes was for 8 years with annual rent 4d.

ff37r-38v. 23 June 1601. Eleanor Higgins v John Crooke; defamation. Evidence of deponents of Chippenham: Richard Vincent*, chandler, 66; was born there and lived there from infancy except for 7 years: John Banks*, glover, 39; has lived there since birth; was Parish Clerk. see D1/423/19

ff43r-45r. 23 June 1601. [Edwardes] v Mr [Miles] Kendall; tithe]. Evidence of witnesses both of Swindon:
Henry Fermer, husbandman, 60; has lived there since birth; c2 years ago went with Mr Kendall to Burdrop house [in Chiseldon] to Mr John Stevens, who then held Broome farm, and agreed to compound the tithes on the farm, if his uncle Nicholas Stevens also agreed:
Richard Hill, 58, husbandman; has lived there 20 years; before that 1 year at Inglesham; born in Faringdon (Berks). See D1/42/18.

ff66r. Undated. Batten v Butler. Evidence of Philip Little, Corsham, husbandman, 30; has lived there from birth; Keynes is a friend to both parties; has seen him in the alehouse but not Batten’s house. See D1/42/20.
