ff1-2. 23 Feb 1603. Final part of deposition of John Jerold and further responses of William Bush and Robert Dewley; testamentary. Relates to a legacy by Robert Knyght for Julian Townesend of Mere, a woman with ‘a want of wit’ and a ‘simplicitie and beastlynes’; Alice Knyght was her grandmother and John Harwyn, her uncle; refers to a copyhold worth £10 pa, presumably bought for Julian.

Robert Bishoppe, tailor, 26; has lived there for 4 years; born at Christian Malford; has known Awood for 2 years and Messiter for 12:ref to St Tyddeardes tide, which falls about 11 days after Michaelmas [poss. St Edward,13 Oct],

Denett Patten, 50, wife of William Patten, caretaker of the Bishop’s Palace, Salisbury; has been married for 38 years; born at Long Wittenham, Berks.
Avice Carey, 44, wife of John Carey, The Close, Salisbury; has been married for 22 years; born at Stowey, Som.
Michael Mackerell*, Salisbury, yeo, 40; has lived there for 13 years; born in Winterbourne Stoke.

Robert Bewley, Connock in Chirton, yeo, 60; has lived there since birth apart form two years at Wedhampton; has known Bartlet for 20 years, and Deane from his cradle.
Paul Knight*, Connock in Chirton, husbandman, 32; has lived there continuously from birth, except 7 years at Hungerford, Berks; has known both parties for 20 years.

Henry Hulbert, Poulshot, butcher, 51; has lived there 15 years; born at Corsham; has known Ellis for 2-3 years and Gawyn for 6 years.
William Hill*, Poulshot, tailor, 34; has lived there from the cradle except for one year when he lived with Mr Lambe younger at Coulston: has known Ellis for 3 years and Gawen for 7.
Lucy True, 50, wife of Richard True, Poulshot, mercer; married since Christmas; born there; has known Ellis for 4 years and Gawen for 6: William Hill is her son in law; his wife is Margaret.

ff16-19r. 18, 20 Apr 1603. Office v John Stawell esq & Elizabeth Awdley alias Stawell; matrimonial. Evidence of:
William Chilcott*, Milverton, Som, yeo, 31; has lived there with Mrs Awdley for 4 years; was born there; has known Stawell for 16 years and Awdley for 12 years: around Shrovetide 1594, they were married, according to the book of Common Prayer in Mr St Albyn’s house at Alfoxton in Bishop’s Lydeard, Som, by Mr Harvy, a minister.
Robert Lawrence*, Bishop’s Lydeard, Som, yeo, 27; has lived ther for 3 years; born at Rampisham, Dors; has known Stawell for 14 years and Awdley for 9.
Edmund Harvey*, 56, St Trinity Hospital, Salisbury; has lived there a quarter of a year; born in Salisbury: has known both parties for 8 years: he performed the marriage; he was then curate of Tisbury.

ff25r-33v. 4 Apr, 31 May 1603. Henry Hunt v John Withie, and counter case; defamation and clerical misconduct: Hunt, curate preached on 7th Commandment; Thou shalt not commit adultery; and said that all women and maids, who were marriageable, and were singers and dancers, were whores; under Moses’ laws they were stoned; to be allowed to repent and be forgiven as now the ‘Queens lawes are turned to the popes lawes’.

Edward Griffeth*, 54, curate of Tetbury [Tidbury], Gloucs; he has lived there for 13 years; born in Montgomery; has known Seede and wife for 4 years, and Blagdeane not at all: Millicent Seede was married shortly after she was 13 or 14 to Thomas Webb; they were married for 5 or 6 years and had 2 or 3 children before he died: shortly after she was married Edward Seede in Tetbury church on 23 Dec 1598.
John Seede*, Upton in Tetbury, Gloucs, gent, 60; has lived there about 50 years and was born there: has known Edward Seede from infancy, Millicent for 4 years and Blagdeane not at all.
John Browning*, Tetbury, Gloucs, weaver, 30; has lived there from birth; has known Edward Seede since the cradle and Millicent for 4 years, and Blagdeane, not at all.

ff35r-37r 17 May, 21 Jun 1603. John Lynning v William Pedyn alias Peddyn. Evidence of of persons all of Marlborough: The witnesses all saw and heard Peddyn, in the street in St Peter’s, say to Lynning that he had emptied his ‘pispottes’ onto his folks working in his shop: and then call him a ‘Pocky knave’ who should cure his wife and children of the ‘pocke’; when asked what sort, he ‘clapt his hand on his buttocke’

John Dodson; fisherman, 38; has lived there for 17 years; born in Hawkeshead [Haxhead, Lancs], now Cumbria; has known both parties for 7 years.

Richard Bayley, Salisbury, yeo, 55; has lived there 7 years; born in Todmordon, Gloucs; has known both parties for 1 year: Richard Moore and his wife Anne were witnesses in a case Mr Lawes v Mr Bond.
Antipas Watkins*, 23, household servant of Andrew Mortimer, one of the general proctors in the Bishop’s court; has served him for 3 years; born in Salisbury; has known Moore for 9 years and Bond for 3: Alexander Lawes began a case of defamation against Bond and called Richard and Susanne Moore as witnesses.

ff39r-40r 21 Jun , 5 Jul 1603. Poole v Wyet alias Brimsdon. Evidence of:
Nicholas Fawconer*, vicar of Kington St Michael, 60; has lived there for 23 years; born in Napton on the Hill, Warwicks; has known Poole for 22 years and Wyet alias Brimsdon, not at all: his predecessor John Taylor, was buried 17 Jul 1580, and he was instituted into the vicarage within a month, but did not serve the cure until the following St Luke’s day [18 Oct], but had a curate do the same: no christenings, marriages or burials were recorded for sometime, including the baptism of John Poole, son of Walter Poole: he baptised Jane Poole, John’s sister on 18 Mar 1582.
Richard Brome, Kington St Michael, labourer, 46; has lived there since the cradle, except for a year when he lived in Batheaston, Som; born at Calne; has known Poole since infancy and Wyet not at all: Mr Phillipps was curate after the death of John Taylor: Richard remembers the baptism of John Poole; was present at the baptism of Jane Poole, together with Mrs Jane Snell, godmother, Ellen Tanner, midwife. See D1/42/23.

ff44v-45v. 19 Jul 1603. Mr Mortimer, guardian at law v Ferdinand Hughes; testamentary. Evidence of:
Richard Maundrell, Compton Bassett, yeo, 40; has lived there a year; born in Rowde: It was generally believed that Ambrose Mortimer was married to Mary Hughes about a year ago: Mary Hughes younger, her daughter, was 7 or 8 at the time and Mr Mortimer was her guardian at law, and had custody of her at Ford’s house in Bromham; Mary younger was a beneficiary of the will of John Hughes.

ff45v-48v, 30 May, 19 Jul 1603. Marshe v Symondes; suitability of parish clerk. Evidence of witnesses all of Box:
Richard Besar, husbandman, 60; has lived there for 40 years; born at Bradford on Avon; has known Marsh for 12 years and Symondes from the cradle: Richard Marsh has been parish clerk of Box for two years, and receives from every householder 4d pa: Marsh made a cure for one of Mr. Snell’s house[hold] of Loxhill: He was chosen by Mr Coren, vicar, who then informed the chiefest of the parish who confirmed the choice. See D1/42/22B, 23.
William Butler, weaver, 62; born there and lived his whole life there; has known Marsh for 14 years and Symondes all his life: Previous parish clerks were William Eaton for 20 years, Nicholas Eaton has son for 2-3 years and John Newman for 26-27 years: Marsh has not of late exercised ‘Physicke or surgery’ but heretofore he has: He sells ‘pedlary wares ‘in the church but has no other recourse to his shop but through the church.
John Cox, weaver, 68; has lived there for 40 years; born at Malmesbury; has known Marsh for 10 years and Symondes for 40:
Thomas Hellier, weaver, 53; has lived there for 26 years; born at Colerne; has known Marsh for 6 years and Symondes for 20. Continued in D1/42/22B f1.
