ff65r-70r. Elizabeth Benger v Geoffrey Benger; matrimonial. Evidence of witnesses of Fifield in Milton unless otherwise stated: Mark Hamlyn, husbandman, 28; has lived there from birth. The couple lived together in Fifield for 10 years and believes that Elizabeth always did honestly, solely dutifully & respectfully behave toward her husband Geoffrey. He was always froward and churlish inches behaviour toward her. 12 months ago he sold his house and having provided no habitation for Elizabeth, she entreated Mark’s wife (he being in London) for a chamber in his house. She stayed there for some time. Benger returned and came to the house. Elizabeth fearing that he would do some evil to her got herself with great speed into her chamber. Geoffrey stayed in the hall with Mark, but as soon as he left he went to the chamber he practised to break the door and did break the ledges and spoiled the lock. He would have broken in violently had not Mark hearing the outcry returned. Although Geoffrey is reputed to be a gentleman born, but he is a man of very base & lewd condition much given to lying, swearing, filching & prigging and such a one as will make his beast when he hath committed any filthiness with any woman. Joan Hamlin, wife of Mark Hamlyn; has lived there for 9 years. Geoffrey said that he would ‘procure 4 of the arrantest knaves’ to carry his wife upon a certeyne brawl or knapp at the townes end, and there perforce should hold her & spread her abroade, while he [Benger] might have his pleasure of her, with other such filthie & abhominall talke’ which Agnes is ashamed to report. She thinks Elizabeth to be badly dealt with all at her husband’s hands. Agnes Mysse/Misse, wife of Nicholas Mysse, Enford; has lived there from birth. Richard Papell, Pewsey, husbandman, 83; has lived there for 30 years. He was at the fair in Marlborough on St Margaret’s day last past, drinking in ale house in St Margaret Street and saw Geoffrey trusting Elizabeth into the alehouse; he ‘drew his sword & florisht yt over her heed in a kind of distemper, using many idle words … she his wife quaking & shaking fearing how he would deale with her’. ff70v-72r, 73r-74r. 23 Feb, 23 Mar 1608. Responses of Mathew Bayliffe*, Weavers mill, Slaughterford, gent to articles of Sir Gilbert Prinn; tithe. He held the 34 acres of arable and two of meadow, one grist mill, one fulling mill with two stocks belonging two the tenement. The tithe claimed is a personal tithe and not bound by law. He has weekly during the time in question fulled one cloth week of his own or of other other men. The tucking mill and stocks was worth in the time in question, £3 10s. He asked a quart for each bushel of corn ground. He has weekly ground 8 bushels of all sorts of grain. The grist mill was worth £6 19s 6d. In 1607 he took in no sorting cloths for tucking. In 1606 he had for tucking of any such sorting cloths 8d.

During the time stated he has, with another tucker, scoured and fulled of other men’s cloths, 8 cloths a week. He fulled 9 sorting fine cloths in a year.The fulling of every fine cloth was worth 10s and for every other sort coarse cloth 2s 4d. The custom in Burcombe if for every parishioner to receive communion at Easter and offerings for eggs 2d. He has had yearly 7 pigs each worth 14d. He has paid all manner of tithes due to Mr Weekes.

In 1608 the greater part of the south aisle of the churches much decayed in leads, covering and timber to the cost of £40, which was paid by the churchwardens Henry Longe and John Ballard. At a general meeting of the parishioners a rate was agreed of 6s per yardland. This was not sufficient and a second vestry was held and a further rate of 2s per yardland was raised. The land in question called Black Ball, lies within the parish but belongs to the house of Richard Singer in Trowbridge.
