At a meeting of the parishioners in church on Sun 10 May last, a rate of £5 was agreed to pay for repairs to the glass, south porch, bells, clappers & wheels.

Responses of William Pinckney*, gent, to articles of John Androes, parish clerk of Rushall. Has been asked to pay 4d a yardland, but will only pay 16d pa according to ancient custom. Ref to Robert Pinckney, parson. Evidence of deponents of Rushall, who claim that the customary payment is 4d per yardland.

He was clerk about 12 ago and had been for 3-4 years; William Pinckney was farmer of the farm and denied paying towards his wage. When he was clerk again about 7 years ago Pinckney paid 4d per yardland. Androes is a very poor man.

Evidence of witnesses all of Marden: Includes accusations of misbehaviour by several parishioners
John Beckingham*, vicar, 72; has lived there for 50 years; has known the plaintiff for 30 years and the defendant for 12. In 1603 the youth of the parish procured a meeting, feast or church ale to which many of the parishioners came forth and ‘spent theire moneys meaning and intending that the proffitt thereof should remain to the mayntenans of the parish Churche' . He was present at the ‘geeving up of the church Reckoning’. Richard Lavington & Thomas Amer were churchwardens. Amer was owed money some of which remained in the hands of John Moxam jun.
Roger Stout, husbandman, 64; has lived there from birth; has now the litigants for 40 years. The feast was called ‘the young mens Ale’. John Moxam was appointed to receive the money spent and to deliver the gain to the use of the church.
Richard Amer, yeoman, 58; has lived there from birth; has known the litigants for 30 years. Robert Carpenter was overseer of the poor.
John Tackle*, husbandman, 37; has lived there for 20 years; was born at Melksham; has known the litigants for 20 years. Moxam was purse bearer and collector of moneys at the church ale. Moxam said that he handed the money to one Carpenter.
William Gibbens, sawyer, 40; has lived there from birth; has known the litigants for 30 years.
Responses of Thomas Amer. Can never remember John Beckingham preaching. When William Gibbins worked for him, he paid him and he called him Mr ‘in respect whereof (as whager man)’. Richard Amer is his brother.

Stephen Mereweather, Shrewton, husbandman, 24; has lived there for a year; before at Orcheston St George where he was born; has known the litigants for 12 years.
Thomas Harris*, Orcheston St George, yeoman, 48; has lived there from birth; has known the litigants for 10 years. He was chosen as an indifferent arbitrator to settle the dispute.
William Merewether, Orcheston St George, yeoman, 53; has lived there for 23 years; was born at Berwick St James. He was chosen as an indifferent arbitrator to settle the dispute.

f72. 14 May 1613. Office promoted by the churchwardens of Stratford Tony v Thomas Guylbert. Responses of Guylbert to articles of Henry Clement & John Speerring, churchwardens. Repairs to the timber of the church and a new cast bell amounted to £4. He believes that the defects might have been amended with a less charge than 16d per yardland, and some timber bought was not used. He holds a cote & 6 acres, worth 20d a year. The churchwardens demanded he pay 12d for 3 cotes, whereas he offered to pay 4d.

Richard Huntley, weaver, 53; has lived there for 40 years; was born there; has known Alice for 4 years and Thomas from the cradle. Alice’s husband, Richard, had 4 loads of wood from the keeper of Oadell park but not paid for them. Divers times he carried his wife to the park and left her at the lodge, and would ‘walke abroade’ the park whilst the keeper did occupy Alice.
