Description | This volume contains the record of visitations of the diocese by the bishop in 1550 and 1553. Each visitation is preceded by a formal record, in Latin, of the proceedings, including the royal mandate for visitation, and the articles to be administered (which were drawn up by the Crown); also most of the deanery sections are preceded by a formal record of proceedings, with mandates, etc. The presentments are made in 1550 by the parishioners, and in 1553 by churchwardens and parishioners, all of whose names are given; the names of proprietors (the lay and corporate rectors) and of the clergy are also given for each parish. Besides the above, the volume contains the following: folio 62, the settlement of a dispute between the vicar of Marcham, Berks., and his parishioners about payment of their dues for Marcham and the chapelry of Garford, 1550; folios 78-91, the bishop's visitation of the cathedral in 1552; folios 63-78 and 168-227, a register of wills proved in the bishop's court, 1550-1559, articles of enquiry 1550 folio 6-8, articles of enquiry 1553 folio 94-98. |
