TitleConsecrations
DescriptionNew or additional churchyards, and new churches and chapels (including ones which had been completely rebuilt on an old site, though not ones which had merely been extensively restored) had to be consecrated by the bishop before they could be used. These papers consist in the main of the petition for consecration, and the act and the sentence of consecration. There are sometimes other papers, such as letters, commissions, etc., but only occasionally architectural plans, and conveyances with site plans; the latter are nearly always copies. The consecration papers are arranged chronologically. There are also two separate bundles of deeds and abstracts of title relating to some of the land consecrated.

Records of consecration can also be found in the bishops registers from the mid 19th cent.
