TitleSurveyors of the highways
[For surveyors' accounts 1654-1744 see 1732/1].
DescriptionAfter 1555 responsibility for maintenance of the highways was transferred from the manor to the parish and a surveyor of the highways was required to be elected who would supervise the obligation of every householder to provide four days (later six) a year (or pay for someone else to perform this work) to repair and maintain the local highways. Responsibility remained with the parish until the Highway Act of 1835 (and finally the Local Government Act of 1894). Records may include rates, accounts and labour books.
