TitleTwo sketch plans of an ornamental cascade
DescriptionThis drawing was identified in S. Jeffrey, 'Hawksmoor’s vision of Wray Wood, Castle Howard', Architectural History, 61:37–72 (2018), as a design for Wray Wood at Castle Howard drawn by Nicholas Hawksmoor. Jeffrey noted that "The hand and the style of annotation on these sheets are similar to some of Hawksmoor’s signed documents, and there is little doubt that they are his work. There is, however, no record of Hawksmoor working at Wilton, nor anything in the development of the Wilton landscape in the early eighteenth century that relates to the schemes illustrated in these sketches. In fact, the features
shown on them correspond to descriptions of Wray Wood at Castle Howard in Yorkshire, an area of established woodland to the east of the present house" (p. 37).
