Collapse 12 - Public and State papers of Sidney Herbert (1810-1861), Baron Herbert of Lea. Herbert was Secretary to the Admiralty, 1841-1845, Secretary at War 1845-1851, and Secretary of State for War 1852-1860. The papers are an important source for the reorganisation of the army, particulaly medical reforms and the campaign in the Crimea. Florence Nightingale was a frequent correspondent and she figures heavily in the series.
Other subjects covered include campaigns in China, India in 1860, Ireland, Wellington College and the Royal medical School at Chatham.

This list to 2057/F8/I-VI was made by Dr. James G. Provan, Associate Professor of History at Millikin University, Decatur, Illinois, U.S.A. and completed in 1975.  
Parts VII to XI were listed in 1992, by Nicola Bailey, a student in the Wiltshire Record Office, when the following items in the original list were not found: 2057/F8/III/A/9c, 2057/F8/IV/A/8, 2057/F8/V/A/67-73, 2057/F8/V/A/140, 2057/F8/V/A/216, 2057/F8/V/B/393h, 2057/F8/V/C/71j.

1 - Memorandum from Sir Francis Head to Sidney Herbert concerning a number of military matters: promotion by generals in the field, examination of officers, promotion from the ranks etc. March 21
2 - Papers presented to the Select Committee on the Army before Sebastopol. Statement of the medical schools in which the medical officers of the British civil hospital, Smyrna, have studied, and the nature of the certificates showing their respective qualifications. May 10. [Ed. The Select Committee was established by the Roebuck motion calling for an inquiry into the conduct of the war.]
3 - An abstract of the services performed by the transports in conveying troops, stores, etc. to the East from 9 February 1854 to 27 April 1855. Other returns included. May 1, 10
4 - Memorandum of the amount voted by Parliament, and authorised by the Treasury, and of the expenditure, on account of machinery and improvements in the Royal Laboratory, Woolwich, 1854-55 May 11
5 - Return of the number of recruits finally approved of for the cavalry, infantry and artillery, in each month, beginning 1 March 1854, distinguishing those who enlisted while enrolled in the militia, and the number who volunteered from the embodied militia. Other returns included. April 24-May 10.
6 - Correspondence between George Graham, registrar general, and Colonel Murdy, at the War Department, and between Graham and Benjamin Hawes, Deputy Secretary at War, relative to Graham’s suggestion for the registration of deaths in the British Army (a procedure already in practice in the Navy). Recommendation rejected by the War Office because of the additional burden it would place on commanding officers abroad. [See 2057/F8/IV/C/19]. December 1 1854-August 10 1855. No date.
7 - Design for a cavalry barrack, marked Paritur Pa Bello, submitted to the official committee on barrack accommodation for the army. Skeletal plans enclosed. September 29.
8 - Report of the proceedings at a public meeting of the Nightingale Fund, held in London [Ed. The Nightingale Fund was designed to give expression to a general feeling that the services of Miss Nightingale in the hospitals in the East demand the grateful recognition of the British people”] November 29.
9 - Copy of a pamphlet titled, A Remedy for the Evils that have Caused the Destruction of a Large Portion of the British Army before Sebastopol. Printed in Paris; author unknown. 1855. No Date.
10 - Copy of a pamphlet on the conduct of the war in the East: The Crimean Expedition. Memoir Addressed to the Government of H. M. the Emperor Napoleon III by a General Officer. Notation on the cover states that Belgian newspapers attributed the pamphlet to Prince Napoleon. 1855.
