1 - Commonplace book, containing comments on negotiations with Spain, 1598, poor relief, 1597; love poems and satirical verse; arguments for and against Mary Queen of Scots; copy letters of the Earl of Essex 1599 and Sir Walter Raleigh, 1618, before their executions; address by a loyal subject to the King, 1603; Lord Burleigh’s precepts to his son; copy petition of the chancellor to the Lords, 1621; notes on growing trees and vegetables; and cookery and medicinal recipes.

3 - Commonplace book of John Clavel, 1603-42, probably the author of The Soddered Citizen (see D.N.B.). Consists mainly of copy letters to and from his uncle about his reformation after previous wild behaviour and his journeys to Ireland on his uncle’s behalf; verse on various subjects, including Ben Jonson’s adoption of him as his son, and several love poems and epitaphs; verse by Philip Massinger; and numerous recipes for medicines. In several hands. With photocopy annotated by JHP Pafford. Only photocopy is produced.

7 - Petition by John Grove esq. for payment of money owing to him when the Exchequer was stopped, or for some appointment in lieu.

8 - Nomination of Robert Grove to a Somerset scholarship at St. John’s college, Cambridge.

23 - Weighing book (labelled on envelope “old N Coker weighing book”). Weights of Troyte-Bullock and Chafyn-Grove families, their visitors and dogs.

24 - Certificate of enrolment of William Chafyn Grove as a freemason.

25 - Commission of William Chafyn Grove as ensign and lieutenant in the Coldstream guards.
