1 - SURVEYS AND VALUATIONS

1 - Survey book of Wiltshire estates. On internal evidence this appears to predate the 1566 survey (2057S/3), and postdate 1555.

2 - Survey of Liquith near Bernewell, (Glamorgan). Three deeds are transcribed at the end, one mentions also Talavan (Glamorgan).

3 - Survey of the lands of William, first earl of Pembroke, made in 1567.

4 - Survey of the manor of Chalke, with a detailed description of properties, names and ages of tenants, rents, services and heriots

5 - Surveys of Wiltshire manors, 1632, bound in three volumes. There is a detailed description of each property, and at the front of each survey is an index of tenants. The surveys are annotated to take note of changes up to about 1700. Vol. i:Bulbridge, Washerne and Ugford St. James; Broad Chalke, with particular of the farm; Dinton and Teffont; Fovant; Fugglestone. Vol. ii: Netherhampton; Stanton St Bernard; Stoke Verdon (Farthing) in Broad Chalke; West Overton; Wilton; Wylye. Vol. iii: Alvediston; Barford St. Martin; Bishopstone; Chilmark and Ridge. Published by WRS Vol. 9, without amendments and notations.

6 - Survey of Burcombe (South Burcombe and North Ugford). Lists tenants by indenture, then copyhold tenants. There are marginal annotations of changes of tenancy down to 1685 (and one entry for 1715). The index bound in at the front appears to refer to the same property at a slightly later date. Published by WRS Vol. 9, without amendments and notations.

7 - Survey of Flamston in Bishopstone South Wilts. List tenants by indenture, then copyhold tenants. There are marginal annotations of changes of tenancy down to 1680. Two indexes are bound in at the front but neither refers to this survey, though they apparently refer to the same property at other dates. At the back is an entry for the Cornish Chough inn in Salisbury. Bound in at the front is the left-hand part of a damaged deed relating to property in Quidhampton, 1699. Published by WRS Vol. 9, without amendments and notations.

8 - Survey of the manor of Alvediston. Detailed description of each holding and terms of tenure.

9 - Survey of the manor of Faulston in Bishopstone South Wiltshire.

10 - Volume containing a certified copy grant by Edward VI to William earl of Pembroke of revenues and lands formerly belonging to Wilton Abbey; draft surveys of Bishopstone South Wilts, Barford St. Martin, Barford St. Dennis and Barford Amesbury, 1686; particular and valuation of the manors of Barford, early 18th century; surveys of Barford St Martin; Amesbury; Bishopstone South Wiltshire; Broad Chalke; Moulshill in Broad Chalke; Bower Chalke; South Burcombe and North Ugford; Barford St. Martin and Barford St. Dennis, 1684.

11 - Survey of the manor of Bulbridge, and Manor of Washerne and South Ugford in Wilton and South Newton. The land in the manor of Bulbridge was purchased from Sir Giles Pole by William the first earl of Pembroke in 1556-57, and includes property in Broad Chalke, Knighton, Avon in Stratford sub Castle and Bemerton, Wilton, Stoke Farthing in Broad Chalke and Ditchampton in Wilton. The land in the manor of Washerne and South Ugford formerly belonged to the abbey of Wilton. For each holding there is a note of the terms on which it was held, a fairly detailed description of the property, and a not of the annual value. Four parchment skins sewn together.

12 - Volume of miscellaneous surveys, abstracts of title, copy deeds, etc;,

13 - Surveys of part of the estate, 1705-1706 with later annotations of changes of tenancy. At the front of each volume is an alphabetical list of freeholders, leaseholders and copyholders with their rents and heriots. Property is described in some detail, i.e. the number of rooms in each building, and the acreage, type, location and value of the land.

14 - Survey of parts of the estate not surveyed in 1705-06 (except for Alvediston which was resurveyed in this later series). Made 1735-c.1740, with later annotations of changes of tenancy. The arrangement is the same as in 2057/S/ 13-27.

15 - These eighteen volumes are a fair copy of most (but not all) of the volumes of two earlier surveys of the estate, c.1705 (2057/S/13-27) and c.1735-40 (2057/S/28-37). They include annotations of changes of tenancy down to 1771. But a few marginal notes, etc., in the original volumes have been omitted; and unlike the originals, they have not been brought up to date by annotations of changes of tenancy after 1771. They do not appear to contain any information which is not found in the originals.

16 - Surveys of the estate in seven volumes. This is mostly a fair copy of 2057 S/13-37 with some corrections and additions; but in the case of Bishopstone, and of Bulbridge, Washerne and South Ugford, earlier surveys were used. For summarized versions, with manorial customs, see 1553/25.

17 - Five volumes of surveys and valuations of property coming into hand. For all places on the estate, in chronological order. There is an index of places at the front of each volume. The volumes are numbered 2-6; No. 1 appears to be missing

17A - Volume containing surveys and rentals of Earldoms near Landford, Flamston, Stoke Farthing in Broad Chalke, Faulston in South Bishopstone South Wilts, Alvediston, Fovant, South Newton, (copy of survey made in 1690), Southgrove in Burbage, Brail farm in Great Bedwyn, Langford, Wilton, South Newton, Netherhampton, Burcombe, North Ugford, Ditchampton in Wilton, Fugglestone and Figheldean. At the front is a note of how the custom corn of Bower Chalke is paid. With Langford is a list of the names and measurements of the coppices there. For Little Wishford (in South Newton) and South Newton, Burcombe and North Ugford, there is a note of customary payments in general. There is an index at the front.

18 - Six survey books with plans, showing the allotments to tenants as a result of parliamentary enclosure. With the plans is a key plan. At the front is an index to the numbers on the plans, and an abstract of the holdings in each tithing.

18A - Swallowcliffe, two surveys bound together; The first is c.1730 and lists the enclosed land; the second is 1739 and lists lands in the common fields.

19 - Surveys of most of the Wilshire estate, giving a brief description of the property, the reference to a plan, and later changes of tenancy.

19A - Survey, Swallowcliffe. Lists each tenant’s holdings in detail, with acreages but no valuation.

20 - Surveys. Though made a few years later, these are virtually identical copies of 2057/S/115-119

20A - Lea and Cleverton (the Fitzwilliam estate). Brief descriptions of property; information about lives added to c.1800. Survey

21 - Eleven rough survey books made round abut the time of enclosure and most apparently connected with it.

21A - Survey (rent roll) of the estate: lists lands in hand; provision rents compounded for by lease; provision rents to be taken in kind or compounded for annually; reserved rents; quit rents; leases for lives; and copyhold estates. Properties are identified by tenants’ names and are not described.

22 - Draft survey books made in connection with the tithe apportionment for each parish.

23A - Survey of the manor of West Overton (by B. Pryce and William Corfield), with annotations of changes of tenancy to 1800 (and one for 1857). At the back are five plans, showing the farm; the cow down, village and inclosures; the common fields; the down and woods; and Savernake grounds (a detached portion at Savernake park). With a key plan identifying the tenants and the property. By each entry in the written survey there is added a calculation of the amount and value of each tenant’s holding, evidently for the purpose of parliamentary inclosure.

24 - Four collected surveys (Particulars as in the tithe award)

24A - Survey West Overton; apparently a draft for 2057/S/79. With the same annotations of changes of tenancy, but also some slightly later ones down to 1805.

25 - A series of collected reference books. Each tenant’s holdings are listed together under this name, and each property is identified by its number in the tithe apportionment and in the estate survey. There are annotations of charges of tenancy down to c.1930. The paper is watermarked 1863.

25A - Survey, unlabelled but evidently of Fovant, and in the same hand as 2057/S/80. With changes of tenancy to 1808.

26 - A series of numerical reference books, with the property arranged in numerical order according to the estate survey (the tithe apportionment numbers are also given). A few changes of owner or occupier are noted.

26A - Survey Stanton St. Bernard. A detailed analysis of each property, with an index and abstract at the front and a description of the common rights (headed “Observations”)

27 - A series of tithe apportionment survey books. These appear to be exact copies of the text of the tithe award for each parish. A few changes of owner or occupier are noted.

27A - Survey of the manor of Netherhampton by B. Pryce and William Corfield, with annotations of changes of tenancy to 1859. At the back are three plans, showing the down (including the race course); the tenantry fields; and the village and inclosures; with a key plan identifying the tenants and the property.

37 - Quidhampton. Survey of the holdings of Lord Pembroke and his tenants, with their number on a plan, and quantity and value. It has subsequently been used as a working copy, apparently for allotments at the time of the enclosure.

37A - Survey Stanton St. Bernard. As 2057/S/86, but without the rough notes.

38 - Survey of the manor of Dinton. Probably made in connection with the tithe award, as it is very similar in format; but the land is arranged under the headings of water meadow, dry meadow and pasture, arable and woodland.

43A - Survey and valuation of Mr. Edward Whatmore’s copyhold estate (17 acres) at Ditchampton in Wilton.

44 - Survey Stanton St. Bernard by Cyrus Combes. Gives details of individual holdings; but someone has later added the “old” number, “old” area and tithe rent charge.

12 - Public and State papers of Sidney Herbert (1810-1861), Baron Herbert of Lea. Herbert was Secretary to the Admiralty, 1841-1845, Secretary at War 1845-1851, and Secretary of State for War 1852-1860. The papers are an important source for the reorganisation of the army, particulaly medical reforms and the campaign in the Crimea. Florence Nightingale was a frequent correspondent and she figures heavily in the series. Other subjects covered include campaigns in China, India in 1860, Ireland, Wellington College and the Royal medical School at Chatham. See also 2057/F4/50-71 for related correspondence. This list to 2057/F8/I-VI was made by Dr. James G. Provan, Associate Professor of History at Millikin University, Decatur, Illinois, U.S.A. and completed in 1975.
